Symptoms of ITP & How to Deal With Them in Ayurveda

ITP or Immune Thrombocytopenia is a rare bleeding disorder due to a low amount of platelets in the blood. It is also known as Immune or Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic purpura. Thrombocytopenia means a decrease in blood platelets. Purpura means purplish looking areas of the skin and mucous membranes.  It is one of the autoimmune diseases which results in the destruction of platelets due to which the patients have the tendency to bleed or bruise in excess. Platelets are produced in the bone marrow. They are needed to stop bleeding by clumping together to form a clot and seal the cuts or tears in the blood vessels and tissues. In case, there is a reduction of platelets in the blood (below 50,000), the wound wont stop bleeding or will take longer to clot. Internal bleeding or bleeding on or under the skin can result.

ITP can be caused by certain medications, due to some infection, pregnancy, or other immune disorders. In majority cases, the cause of ITP is unknown so it is termed as Idiopathic. Genetic mutation can also cause thrombocytopenia.ITP is more common in young women and older men.  Children get ITP usually after a viral illness like chickenpox, mumps or measles. In children, ITP is acute as it lasts less than six months. In adults, the ITP is more chronic and last longer.

Symptoms of ITP

The most prominent symptom of ITP is bleeding which can include ecchymosis or bruising and red dots on the skin or mucus membranes also called petechiae. Petechiae often looks like a rash.

Frequent nose bleeding, bleeding from the mouth and gums, bleeding from digestive or urinary tract are also visible symptoms of low platelet count.

Women experience abnormally heavy menstruation.

There is prolonged bleeding from cuts and during surgery.

The patient feels tired and has frequent headaches.

In some case, the patient develops enlarged spleen which can lead to abdominal pain and tenderness.

Jaundice or yellow color of skin is another common symptom.

In rare cases, there is bleeding within the brain.

ITP is diagnosed by the doctors after a complete physical exam and going through the patient's medical history. Blood tests and blood smear is done to confirm the disorder.

Treatment of ITP according to Ayurveda

The treatment of ITP is determined by the severity of its symptoms. In some cases, no therapy is needed while in some, the medicines are prescribed. Blood or platelet transfusion is done is some cases if needed.

For most of the history of humanity man ate a diet of wild game and natural vegetation including some seeds, nuts, and fruit during certain sea-sons. In our era, with the advent of processed foods, mankinds diet has undergone a radical change. People are eating foods that never existed in nature before, foods which the body was never designed to utilize. The result is that the heavy consumption of refined sugar, and refined flour products too, has led to serious health problems for those who regularly eat them. Today 65% of Americans are overweight, and 27% are clinically obese. Even children are starting to show more and more symptoms of this growing health problem. Diabetes is starting to appear more frequently in the very young. When we look at the diet of the typical American, it is easy to see how this has happened. The average American each year consumes 125 pounds of sugar in the form of 300 cans of soda, 200 sticks of gum, 18 pounds of candy, 50 pounds of cakes and cookies and 20 gallons of ice cream. I want to make clear just how much sugar is found in the sodas people are drinking each day. There are 7 to 8 teaspoons of sugar in some form, in the average soda drink. If you have a soda at lunch, one as a snack in the afternoon, one with your dinner, and one as you watch TV or go out for a final snack later in the night, you have consumed 28 spoonfuls of sugar.

Americans are also consuming too many foods which are made from highly refined flour, which act just like sugar in the body, such as pasta, bread and cookies and cakes. In addition to all the many obvious sources of sugar in the typical American diet, sugar is used as an inexpensive additive to improve the taste of many items in which the producers in order to increase profits use cheaper inferior ingredients or use less expensive ingredients. Among these items, you may have guessed, because they taste so sweet, are ketchup, and jams and jellies, which really should have no added sugar and should be made primarily from the fruit. Fruit flavored drinks and fruit flavored yogurts, and especially, sweetened canned fruit have unnecessarily large amounts of sugar in some form in them. But it is also surprising how much sugar, unhealthy sugar, is found in items like peanut butters, bread, soups, pickles, mustard, canned dishes like baked beans, and salad dressings. Even Americans general idea of proper cui-sine contributes to this problem. Making potatoes a staple at almost every meal has been an additional negative health factor. Potatoes, among all other vegetables, are the one of the most likely to affect the body in the same way as refined sugar.
A surfeit of carbohydrates in any form will lead to gaining weight and eventual obesity, but it is sugar in all its forms, and refined flour in our diets that do the most harm. They lead to a fast rise in blood sugar, which causes the pancreas to produce a large amount of insulin to lower our blood sugar quickly, because high blood sugar is dangerous to our health. Unfortunately, this strong dose of insulin makes the blood sugar drop below our normal level and makes us feel down in mood. In order to compensate for this psychological effect, we are driven by cravings to seek an immediate repeat of our ingestion of sugar to again raise our blood sugar to make ourselves feel better, and so the cycle continues on and on. This results in our taking in more calories than are necessary to supply energy to the body. The end result is overweight and eventual obesity. The high amounts of insulin also have other deleterious effects.

They make the insulin receptors become less and less sensitive, requiring the pancreas to produce larger and larger amounts of insulin each time, to deal with same amount of high incoming sugar. Eventually the receptors become very insensitive to the incoming insulin, and the person has developed a condition referred to as insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance aggravates another problem which results from the production of insulin in the body. When insulin in the body is high, another hormone called glucagon is low. Glucagon is a hormone which promotes the release and utilization of fat from the fat storage cells for energy. So that when glucagon is present, you will be burning and thus reducing your fat stores. In other words, you will be losing weight and the weight will be a loss of fat. However, the high level of insulin in insulin resistant people keeps them from burning any of their fat stores. They can only burn incoming sugar and carbohydrates, and when they are depleted, they will begin to break down and use muscle tissue as a source of energy. This is, again, because the insulin has blocked getting access to the body's fat by blocking the production of the necessary hormone, glucagon. Now you understand why people who have eaten a lot of sugar, and sugar acting foods like refined flour and grains, and potatoes, in their life all the time have had trouble losing weight, or permanently keeping off any weight they have lost through extreme measures like very strict diets or fasting.

Eventually people on these refined high carbohydrate diets exhaust their pancreas, which stops generating any insulin at all, and they become diabetic, and must take insulin regularly to keep their blood sugar from staying at dangerously high levels.

There is another serious problem with too much sugar, sugar addiction. For many years people have spoken of sugar addiction because of the seemingly addictive behavior of people who have a strong desire for foods with sugar. However, it is only recently that it has been scientifically been shown to be a genuine addiction. Rats fed sugar showed classic signs of withdrawal when their sugar fix was taken away from them. When they were allowed to eat sugar again, they binged on it. The sugar had triggered natural pleasure producing opiods in their brains. The effect is similar to morphine and heroin, though not as powerful. Actual studies of these animals brains showed an accelerated growth of dopamine receptors in the nucleus accumbens in their brains. This helps explain why people who eat sugar regularly, have strong cravings and seek a sugar fix many times throughout their day.

You are probably addicted to sugar if you have the following: if you have cravings for food containing sugar, if you cant stop eating after one piece of candy or one bite of cake or other baked goods; if you cant go for more than a few hours without experiencing a letdown with fatigue or irritability or anxiety; if you have to have your sugared coffee and donuts or other baked goods every morning and have and eat candy and other sweets in your home all the time; if you regularly drink sugared sodas during the day to give yourself a pick-me-up because youre dragging.

Nutritionally, refined sugars present another problem. It takes vitamins and minerals to digest and assimilate ingested refined sugars. Unprocessed sugar cane juice is rich in vitamins and minerals and provides some nourishment to the body, though it is still too high in sugar to be good for the body. But refined sugar is an empty calorie, which uses up valuable vitamins and minerals in order to be digested without supplying any of them. Thus, eating a lot of refined sugars depletes the body of these valuable health promoting factors. Thats why, you now can understand, even overweight people who have become so because of large amounts of sugar in their diets, can actually suffer from malnutrition.

Heres a list of some of the negative health effects of sugar, and the refined flour products and potatoes that act like sugar within the body. Sugar can:

cause an increase in insulin being generated in the body
cause an increase in insulin sensitivity
overstress the pancreas causing damage
cause diabetes cause weight gain and obesity
produce a significant rise in triglycerides
reduce helpful high density cholesterol, known as HDLs
promote an elevation of harmful cholesterol, know as LDLs
increase total cholesterol
cause atherosclerosis
increase systolic pressure
cause hypertension
upset the bodys mineral balance
promote tooth decay
cause hyperactivity, anxiety, concentration difficulties, and crankiness
in children
lead to alcoholism
cause depression

If you are seriously craving sugar, you should avoid all sugars. The following is a list of sugars and sweeteners that act like sugars, though you may not have recognized them as sugars before reading this article. Of course, if a label just says sugar, you will avoid that too!

AVOID THESE SWEETENERS: corn syrup, fructose, high fructose corn syrup, honey, sucrose, maltodextrin, dextrose, molasses, rice milk, almond milk, white grape juice, fruit juice sweetened, brown rice syrup, maple syrup, date sugar, cane sugar, corn sugar, beet sugar, succanat and lactose.

There are many other points to be made if one wishes to guide oneself correctly. Raw sugar and brown sugar, which was at one time sold in a lot of health food stores and still may be found in some supermarkets, is actually highly refined white sugar with some molasses put back in to give it brown color. Fructose doesnt increase leptin, a hormone that decreases your appetite, and doesnt suppress ghrelin, the hormone that makes you hungry. Thus, people who eat food containing fructose are likely to take in more calories, not less. And remember, almost all simple sugars, fructose included, and not just refined white sugar, are metabolized quickly and raise insulin levels too quickly. Just like refined white sugar, they play a role in creating insulin resistance. In addition, fructose is converted into triglycerides more efficiently than glucose elevating triglycerides that are linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Fructose converts to fat more readily than any other sugar, and some believe its prevalence in our present food supply has made it an important factor in making Americans fatter and fatter.

Eating small amounts of fruit will not provide unhealthy large amounts of natural fructose, but fruit juices are best avoided as being too high in fructose for the body to assimilate without generating too much insulin. Aside from limited amounts of fruit, avoid fructose in food just as you would table sugar. One of the best ways to limit your intake of fructose, in general, is to eliminate soda and fruit juices from your diet.

Most artificial sweeteners are increasingly considered to be unhealthy for the body. Aspartame is the technical name for the brand names NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure. Aspartame, which is frequently found in diet sodas, accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious. In addition, Aspartame suppresses serotonin production, the chemical in the brain that contributes to your feeling satisfied after a meal. The end result from ingesting Aspartame, just as it was from people eating fructose, is that people are less satisfied with their food and tend to eat more. Diet sodas may actually be increasing your total intake of calories.

Finally, artificial sweeteners in general, just like real sugar, give you an intense experience of tasting something sweet, which psychologically stimulates cravings to consume even more sweet tasting things.

In general, you will be better off health wise if you only buy products that say no sugar added. Jams should say fruit only. Often fruit juices are added to the food item, but dont be fooled, this is an unhealthy form of concentrated sugar too, even though it is originally from fruit. And remember, cocaine and heroine are derived from natural sources, but no one would say they are good for your health. A lot of poisons start out as plant material too. So do not be fooled by people who insist certain sugars are healthy because they are made from natural sources.

On the other hand, dried fruits should be much more limited because they have a high concentration of sugars. And remember, as noted above, fruit juices are too high in sugars to be appropriate for a low insulin generating diet. Berries, on the other hand, are a good choice.

Now you have all the knowledge necessary to take with you as you pursue your new healthier life style, free from the deleterious effects of refined sugars and refined flour, knowing that the addition of potatoes to your meal is never a healthy choice. luxury in those countries that were unable to grow them,

used them to enhance their meals. Why, we might reasonably
ask, with the development of economical, long-distance
transport have societies that traditionally use few spices

obvious answer is that we like best what we are used to.

As most of us have learned by experience, spices are
delicious when used as seasonings, but few of them are
considered much of a delicacy when consumed on their own -
which was generally the form in which these foods were
eaten by our hunter-gatherer ancestors. To most of us, even
the thought of eating a ginger root, cinnamon bark, or
chewing on a clove is thoroughly unpleasant; but for our
ancestors this would not have been much of a hardship. As
they were forced to eat them out of necessity, our
forebears probably came to enjoy the intense flavour
experience that many of these spicy plants provided.

The major factor underlying the difference in tastes
between modern and ancient societies and between different
cultures today can be attributed simply to conditioning;
when one is exposed to a food at a young age or for long
enough later on in life, one is more likely to acquire a
liking for it. Many of us will have experienced this effect
ourselves when, typically as adults, we initially find a
novel taste or flavour unpleasant. After subsequent
exposure to the same food we begin to find the taste
inoffensive and maybe even delicious.

However this does not fully explain the failure of the west
to use more spices in processed and home cooking now that
they have become cheap and readily available all over the
world. One reason is that salt, which has for hundreds of
years been an important feature of western diets, is often
considered to be enough of a flavor-enhancer. Sugar, too,
has become one of the cheapest most ubiquitous flavorants
and is added to almost all processed foods. From a very
young age our palates have become accustomed to foods that
have high salt and sugar content that tends to inhibit the
appreciation of other flavours.

Another very important factor is the extensive use by the
food industry of artificial-flavors and colorings that
became available in the west over the last century.
Synthetic flavorings and colorings dramatically enhance the
taste and visual appeal of foods, in much the same way that
spices have done for thousands of years. They also have the
added advantage of being extremely cheap, and have been
adopted with alacrity by the manufacturers of the processed
food that now constitutes such a large part of our diets.
Today synthetic food additives are ubiquitous and feature
on the labels of almost all packaged foods. They have no
health benefits (and are probably harmful) and it is
unfortunate that they have prevented the wider acceptance
of their natural, health-promoting counterparts that have
become affordable ? if not quite as inexpensive as
synthetic alternatives ? and widely available all over the
world.

The dearth of spices in the diets of those of us living in
most Western countries means that we are depriving
ourselves of the important spice-derived compounds that
have, since time immemorial, provided us with an umbrella
of protection against many diseases.

Now that we are beginning to understand just how valuable
they are to our health and well-being we no longer have an
excuse for not regularly eating cinnamon (with its

It seems for so many of us that life gets reprioritized, and our health is rarely at the forefront of our to-do lists. By the time I meet with clients, they are usually at a point where they have tried four or five diets, hoping for a quick and motivating change. Unfortunately, they were looking for something that was fast and supposedly worked for the masses, without taking into consideration that they are very special individuals with individual needs and personal habits.

In the past, you might have decided, OK, Im going to go to the gym every day and have no sugar and only salads for dinner! Youve just jumped from a very long time of creating bad habits to completely wiping the slate clean and going to an extreme level, expecting to create several new habits overnight. This is a disaster waiting to happen because coupled with this extreme remodeling, you expect to lose weight immediately and get back what you had five years ago in thirty days.

To achieve your goals for life, we first need to understand what got us to where we are, dissolve those unhealthy habits, and create new, healthy ones. I mentioned above that I believe in taking small baby steps toward this thought process. If we try to leap, usually, we jump too far and fail, so be patient, and take only a couple of challenges at a time. I continually see that those who are dissatisfied with their health dont exercise consistently, nor do they have healthy snacks available to them. During the next couple pages, I will be suggesting ways to create new habits one week at a time.

It takes twenty-one days to create a habit and three days to break it.

Lets create a new habit by committing to exercise two times per week for thirty minutes during the first week you enter a program. Now you might be thinking that two times is not enough to meet your goals, but what it does do is create an easy, attainable habit that doesnt feel overwhelming, and once two times a week is easy, then consider three times a weekbut no rush!

Now that youre on your way to feeling stronger, consider adding more antiaging foods into your diet. If you have a habit of having chips or a cookie with your lunch, change your habit and grab an apple or pear.

Last, drink three cups of water a dayagain, not a huge amount, but if you are like many of the people I meet, waters an afterthought, so commit to three a day!

Overview suggestion for your first week:

1. Exercise two times for thirty minutes.
2. Replace your mid-day potato chips, French fries, or cookie with fruit.
3. Drink three glasses of water each day.

Another must for each week is to keep a food journal of what you are eating and what time you are eating it. You can write in a nice, tidy journal or on a bunch of sticky noteswhatever works in your world! You dont need to show this to anyone, but it will help you with your own accountability. This is so important; its a defining success with those who achieve their goals!

When you feel solid with your new habits, consider week 2.

Rolling Your New Habits into Week 2

It takes twenty-one days to create a habit and three days to break it.

In hopes that your first weeks challenge has been doable for you, remember that its all about your commitment! If you slipped, its OK, but dont let the slippery slope go too far, or the habits nonexistent. Get right back on it until it becomes natural! Setting short-term and long-term goals is vital in any goal-worthy situation. I recommend you have an accountability partner or coach to help you determine and reach your goals. Its also important to reward yourself (not necessarily with food in this case!) once youve achieved your goals. Some suggestions might be to get a special manicure if you can comfortably fit into an old pair of jeans, or take a half day off and spend time with friends if youve been able to consistently work out three times a week for forty-five days. Pat yourself on the back, and embrace this new lifestyle you are creating!

We want to roll week 1s habits into week 2, so heres your challenge for the next week:

1. Go shopping for healthy food to keep in your car, office, or home, and do this once a week.
2.Eliminate all foods (or most) that contain white flour and/or white sugar (very important with a weight loss program).
3. Do ten push-ups and twenty lunges every day, as long as they can be done safely.
4. Eat a high-fiber breakfast with a little protein.

It takes twenty-one days to create a habit and three days to break it.

If youve been integrating weeks 1 and 2 toward creating new habits, you are on a roll now! Youre feeling great, building momentum, and probably expecting fast results! Heres a reality check: it takes time and patience. Keep focused, however, because you will achieve your goals if you allow your body to adjust to a new healthy way of living. We still want to continue with the past two weeks goals, but now we have a few more to add or modify:

* Work out three times a week for thirty minutes (adding on a day now!).
* Have a vegetable two times a day.
* Have a fruit two times a day.
* Only choose nonfat versions of milk/soy in your coffee drinks if you have these (lots of hidden calories here!).

With this week, you are starting to add in nutrient-rich choices. These choices will also add fiber to your diet, helping you stay fuller longer, among many other health benefits.

You should be reaching one of your short-term goals by now. Keep the momentum moving, and have fun with these new foods!

Putting It All Together with Your Fourth Week

Congratulations! If youve been following the four-week plan, you are now well into your twenty-first day of new habits. Drinking more water is easier, working out is part of the day, and having a piece of fruit should be natural for you. Im also hoping youve taken time to shop for your healthy foods once a week so youre never running to McDonalds because you are famished!

On this home stretch of creating new habits one week at a time, thank yourself for being not only motivated, but disciplined enough to create new choices for your health. This is a big deal and one you should be proud of!

I know you are still doing your food logs (if not, get back on it!), and now I suggest you write down one healthy choice you make every day in your journal as a reminder toward your goals. Be proud of your accomplishments!

* Increase your water to four glasses a day.
* Have fish two times a week in place of a fattier protein (i.e., red meat, pork, dark meat chicken).
* Eat every three to four hours, never being too hungry or too full.

This last weeks challenge is the beginning to creating health and wellness for life. Every one is different with his habits and goals, and all of the weeks are suggestions to the average, health-conscious person. 15. Anxiety, angst, worry, fear & panic lead to chronic-stress. A consistent time-line of negative, anxiety-ridden consciousness, raises the production of the Cortisol by your Adrenal Gland. Disease is a predictable result over time.

16. Step One: sit down, close your eyes, and let go of your present thoughts. In ten-seconds your brain shifts from Beta to Alpha cycles per second (brainwaves). Its measured by an EEG (Electroencephalogram). Your Electro-Magnetic Field production creates your Attitude & decision-making.

17. Step Two: Take a deep diaphragmatic-breath from your nose, and on exhaling through your mouth, repeat four times, the sound, HUM-m, Hum-m, Hum-m, and Hum-m.

18. Deep breathe again, three-more times, for a total of sixteen Hum-ms. Keep your hand on your belly-button and feel it rise & fall. Thats diaphragmatic-breathing.

19. Diaphragmatic breathing causes switching from your Sympathetic to and its reliance on the fight-or-flight response, using adrenaline & Cortisol, to your Parasympathetic Nervous System, and its deep relaxation using Acetycholine. Which is your healthy choice?

20. Focus your attention on inhaling through your nose and exhaling from your lips. We use a Mantra a meaningless word or sound, to keep track of our breathing. Mentally repeat on inhaling - Be-e. Now exhale and mentally-repeat, the mantra, Di-vine.

21. Step three: please maintain a Smile on your face while meditating. There are two-kinds of smiles: one is showing your teeth only, and the other consists of your eyes (crows feet on sides of each eye), and showing your teeth.

22. Smiling deeps your meditation for relaxation & self-improvement. Oh yeah, it permits you to become a Speed Reader for life.

23. Step four: with your eyes closed, intentionally BLINK your eyes opened and closed, five-times. Why? It washes (moisturizes) your eye lenses, located behind the IRIS (the colored area of your eyes).

24. Intentional-Blinking exercises your extra-ocular (six ciliary muscles in each eye), and keeps them flexible and oiled. We do not Blink enough at the computer, causing Dry-Eye and blurred-vision over time.

25. A ten-minute meditation of not judging what your consciousness produces, and merely observing, creates a deep relaxation that lasts up to four (4) hours. Nice ROI.

It is our thinking, which creates emotions, & decision-making. Cortisol, the Stress hormone, is a product of our mind, and can be controlled by our Willpower.

These ten-minutes of Mindfulness (non-thinking), by just observing without reacting & judging, is an example of mind-over-matter, and cause-and-effect. Take control.
