I grew up in a large family, more exactly, a large extended family. We lived on tight budget, so we could not afford any fancy meals, let alone eating out in a restaurant. Our dinners were always very simple and plain, but I enjoyed every minute of the family dinner time. During that time, grandma usually shared her tips on how to get the best bargain in the farmers market; aunt Ling, who was a nurse, would make sure everyone understand how to protect ourselves as flu season approached; cousin Yu always told us new jokes he learned from his classmates. It still feels like yesterday, vivid in my mind.

Years later, I started my own family with Roy in the U.S. Then we had our two lovely children, Andy and Allie, who are 10 and 8 years old now, respectively. With more tasks and projects added to our to-do list, we have to cross out quite a few family activities that I love, such as weekend movie night. One thing that I insist on being set as a high priority is family dinner.

We sit at our table and eat, and each person talks about his/her day. It is often during the dinner conversation that I notice the ever-changing nuances of my children. For example, when Andy suddenly refused to talk about his best friend, whose name was a high-frequency word in his usual conversation, I knew some conflicts between the two may be going on and I should pay more attention to Andys emotional changes and see whether private conversation or help is needed. When Allie proudly talked about her performance in school holiday singing assembly, I saw her passion in singing and started thinking about having a duet with my little diva in our family holiday party.

It is also an excellent time to talk to kids about what our jobs are like. Instead of envying the fact that Daddy and mommy can play on computer the whole day (we wish!), they learn about responsibilities, team work, and the value of hard work. While we share with them what we find interesting about our work, occasionally we also talk about the stress weve experienced to let them know that life isnt as easy as we imagined. My kids sometimes provide their comments and suggestions. One day, my husband mentioned the disagreement that he had with a colleague about a job-related issue. Andy stated, I think you should talk more about this with your colleague. Maybe he is right. Thats why you need more communication. Wow. I was so glad that while we intended to teach our children, we were also learning something from them.

Dinner time is our family time! I cannot emphasize enough how important it is. According to a study conducted by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, Compared with teens who have infrequent family dinners (fewer than three per week), children who have dinner with their parents five or more days a week feel closer with their parents, show better academic performance, and have low risk of substance abuse. As the study report states, Parental knowledge about whats going on in a childs life is important in raising healthy, drug-free kids. A more recent study published in Journal of Pediatrics shows that family meals during adolescence can be protective against the development of overweight and obesity in young adulthood.

Having family dinners means I have to devote more time to grocery shopping and cooking, in addition to my busy daily work and the time required for kids extracurricular activities, but its definitely worth it. Whether it is because of my clinging to my childhood memories or my raising awareness of health benefits of family eating together, I believe in the power of family dinners.

If lifting weights, working the elliptical or doing yoga aren't quite up your alley, you may want to consider hitting the tennis courts to lose weight. Not only is it a fun alternative to the gym, it's also an effective way to get into great shape.

So it's February already and, if you're like me, you've now reached a pivotal point in the execution of your most recent New Year's resolution. That moment where it's been a few weeks and the novelty of the whole thing has begun to wear off.

You want to shed that spare tire, but you've remembered the truth of what doing so actually entails. i.e. you have to keep exercising. A lot.

And while you probably got a sweet deal on your gym membership, actually going to the place and working out several days each week is only slightly more fun then getting your teeth fixed or doing your taxes.

Thankfully, there are other ways for you to meet your weight loss goal. Ways that don't involve pumping iron or killing yourself on the elliptical.

For me, it's as simple as grabbing one of my racquets, some balls and heading to the local park for an hour or two of tennis. If the gym, or lawn care, isn't your scene, a little bit of tennis might be something you could get into as well. Even if you're a beginner, it's a fun way to get out and about, enjoy some competition and get into tip-top shape while you're at it.

According to estimates from the American Dietetic Association, recreational tennis players can burn anywhere from 600 to just over 1300 calories during a two-hour session. For serious, competitive players, that range jumps to between 768 and more than 1700 calories. Just how much you burn depends on a number of factors, including your weight and activity level.

As a general rule, the more you weigh, the more you burn. According to Harvard Health Publications, a 155-pound person could burn as much as 520 calories in a single hour. Add 30 pounds and that number jumps by 100. A heavier person could burn even more by getting in a game or two.

That is some serious burnage.

It should come as no surprise, however, given the number of complex muscular and cardiovascular operations that are happening when you play tennis. The running and sharp movements work everything from your feet and legs to your core and even your upper body.

Meanwhile, serving and returning balls is going to work your arms, neck and back, all the way down through the waist and abdominals. It's a total body workout without the need to hyper-focus on specific body parts.

In addition to working your muscles, burning calories and losing weight, you could see increased flexibility, footwork and improved hand-eye coordination as well. Not to mention the increased stamina that comes with regular cardio work.

NBA All-Star Gordon Hayward was a star tennis player in high school; that experience has helped his lateral movement skills on the hardwood. He's also one of the more active players in the league. Last season, he traveled a combined 202 miles on the court over the course of 80 games.

Coincidence? I think not.

His history as a tennis player helped him become one of basketball's elite athletes. If hitting the gym isn't your thing, you might consider following in his footsteps to lose that weight. Tennis isn't just an effective way to shed unwanted pounds and improve your cardiovascular health it's also fun.

And if you can improve your body and have fun doing it, you're probably doing pretty well for yourself.

Over recent years there has been a significant investment and many breakthroughs in the development of exoskeletons to assist individuals with mobility and strength.

There are a handful of companies worldwide currently developing such products, and whilst there are further advances envisaged over time, products currently available are already making a significant difference to the lives of people who have been affected by Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI).

An exoskeleton is electronically powered suit which is attached to and placed over an individuals paralysed or weakened limbs, allowing them to stand and walk or perform daily activities with powered assistance from the suit.

There are currently three leading companies, Ekso, ReWalk and Rex Bionics that produce exoskeletons for use by SCI patients. Each companys product differs, though each has the purpose of allowing a patient to stand and walk.

Up until 6 years ago, exoskeletons were used exclusively in clinics as they had to be controlled by a therapist. Things did however change when a new machine was developed, which could be controlled solely by the user, meaning they could walk completely independently.

Awareness of exoskeletons was raised significantly in April 2012 when Claire Lomas, who had been paralysed following a horse riding accident, completed the London Marathon using a suit.

The cost of an exoskeleton at present is significant, with a machine costing in the region of 100,000. As a consequence, they are still used almost exclusively by hospitals or treatment centres in a rehabilitation or therapeutic context.

Use of an exoskeleton within a rehabilitation programme broadens the range of the exercises that can be carried out and allows a patient to perform therapeutic exercises in a standing position, and enhance the benefit of such rehabilitation.

The benefits of the use of an exoskeleton for Spinal Cord Injury (SCI ) patients go beyond the context of therapy. There is a clear psychological benefit of an SCI patient being in a position where they are able to stand again. This of itself is significant, though it also allows the user to interact socially at eye level with others.

Eggtastic invention initiation of McDonalds Breakfast

Chickens around the world work overtime so as to be able to produce enough eggs to appease the appetite of egg-lovers. Eggs have been a part of everyday diet of people since antiquity, owing to the health-benefits of consuming eggs. In several parts of the world, but especially Europe, America, Japan, and South America, eggs are used not only as a great source of protein but in several dishes which are specific to the cuisine favored in the region. Which is to say that whether it is in the east or the west, Eggs do come up on top as the best.

It will not be wrong to claim that you can take the cuisine out of the eggs (and still happily consume them), but you cannot take eggs out of the cuisine. For a lot of people, eggs are more than just a tasty source of protein, they stand apart in the food kingdom as unique. Although a wide variety of animals produce eggs, humans mostly consume eggs that are laid by chickens. In as much as that, eggs emerging from different parts of the world are different. It is known that china has come up with a type of eggs which remains preserved and is hence called century eggs. In Japan eggs are used in many rolled items such as sushi, rice cakes etc. American eggs are different from eggs that are produced in Europe; as American eggs are first cleaned when they are laid by the chicken but no such cleaning ritual happens in European countries. According to reports published online, Paraguay is the country where most eggs are consumed in the entire world, followed closely by Mexico, France, America and other European countries. This love affair with eggs cannot be merely described in words as eggs have passed effortlessly through the transparent lines which classify different dishes and cuisines all around the world, leading to its status as a globally produced and consumed winner; and that is when we have not even mentioned the numerous health-benefits associated with the intake of eggs. Looking at this landscape which is perfectly formed for a universal egg-based dish to rise, it is hard to comprehend how no one in the quick service restaurants industry thought of incorporating eggs into their menu, except for a man named Herb Peterson.

In 1972, Ray Kroc the world renowned genius behind the McDonalds franchise, was invited to a McDonalds restaurant in Santa Barbara to try the first McDonalds burger with eggs. When Kroc saw the breakfast sandwich hot egg, combined with cheese, Canadian bacon and English muffins, he was baffled as an egg-sandwich was unheard of in those times. However, after taking a bite, Kroc, who had had lunch already, didnt stop till he had two sandwiches.

He didnt want me to reject it out of hand, which I might have done, because it was a crazy ideaa breakfast sandwich. It consisted of an egg that had been formed in a Teflon circle, with the yolk broken, and was dressed with a slice of cheese and a slice of grilled Canadian bacon. This was served open-faced on a toasted and buttered English muffin. I boggled a bit at the presentation. But then I tasted it, and I was sold, Kroc said.

Eggstastic invention, some would call it (tongue in cheek).

That was the day McDonalds most popular breakfast item was invented and since then has spread to dominate the vast reach of McDonalds empire. In the year 1976, the first McDonalds breakfast menu began that is four years after the EggMcMuffins tasting session with Ray Kroc and Herb Peterson.

According to Peterson, while experimenting with egg sandwiches for a breakfast dish, he found out that poached eggs were too runny they would just run out of the enclosing bacon and muffins, occasionally dripping over whatever he happened to be wearing then. So, after a lot of brain-storming, Peterson came up with an idea to rid the problem: he steamed the eggs in a cluster of rings in which eggs could be given the shape of the muffins. When topped with Canadian bacon, the resulting sandwich turned out to be immensely tasty, and in time, popular.

As it has less sodium in it by virtue of its preparation (steamed), Egg McMuffin became a healthy breakfast sandwich options for a lot of people, owing to its immense popularity in all the continents where a McDonalds restaurant can be found. Today it is so popular, that in many countries, the sandwich is served all day long.

The silicon wafers are strong at room temperature, but they become weaker as the temperature is increased. The furnace manufacturing steps are essential for the processing of ICs (integrated circuits). During this process a non-uniform high temperature produces a non-uniform expansion within the wafer. Therefore, a consequential thermal stress can cause restricted or extensive furnace slip.

It obstructs the formation of silicon crystalline structure and completely decomposes the electrical and physical features of the wafer. The dislocations that are formed by slip can cause gate oxide integrity collapse, severe junction leakage, and untimely breakdown. The physical deformation can cause wafer breakage, pattern misalignment, chucking problems and focus instability.

A non-uniform temperature is produced in the silicon wafer during temperature furnace push. This causes a bright beaming energy from the kiln tube to heat up the wafer edge prior than the wafer center. This can also cause slip around the silicon wafer edge and the deformation of the silicon wafer. During temperature ramp-down and furnace pull, the wafer cools earlier at the edges than in the center.This cause temperature non-uniformity at the wafer center and causes the wafer to bend.

After years of experience in fabrication of ICs (on silicon wafers), engineers revealed that furnace slip has always created a problem.  The engineers have always faced problems in increasing the speed of furnace, temperature ramps and push-pull to maximize the furnace output. However, at the same it is also necessary to restrain the speed of temperature ramps and push-pull to prevent wafer damage. Whenever a new IC technology produces extreme built-in device stress, the balance shifts. This is because furnace recipes which had earlier created slip-free silicon wafers became recipes which created massive furnace slip.

In the thermal cycling process, the stress which occurs on oxide is used on the trench of sidewalls. The thermal stress created due to temperature non-uniformities in the wafer generate slip dislocations and shift those dislocations into the leakage sensitive area of the device. Now days IC devices with STI structures can be fabricated easily by moderating both the furnace stress and the built-in IC device stress.

Temperature is the most important factor that controls the strength of the thermal oxide silicon wafers, and this must be kept in mind when setting temperature ramping and furnace pull/push conditions. The strength of the wafer decreases drastically when the temperature is increased from 700C to 800C. If wafers are pulled or pushed into a furnace with the tube set at 800C, the slip creates problem and can damage it. Therefore, the strength of the wafer is inversely proportional to the increase in temperature. It is essential to use lower ramping rates for higher temperature ranges to prevent wafer slip during furnace temperature ramping.

Other factors that affect the strength of the silicon wafer:

The higher the density of dislocations in a thermal oxide silicon wafer, the weaker the wafer. It takes a large stress to create a dislocation, but only a small stress can cause an existing dislocation to multiply or move.
The higher the interstitial oxygen concentration, the stronger the wafer. Dissolved or interstitial oxygen atoms connect themselves with dislocations and stop them from multiplying.
The higher the amount of precipitated oxygen, the weaker the wafer. Increasing oxygen precipitates use up the interstitial oxygen and blow out the new dislocations.
The higher the concentration of dopant atoms, the stronger the silicon wafers. The damaged fields around atoms, which are larger or smaller than the silicon atoms, obstruct the motion of dislocations.
Integrated circuit films can apply stress on the underlying silicon wafers and make slip more appropriate. Trench and other IC structures, as well as mechanical damage issues, can deteriorate the wafer by acting as stress concentrators.
